Once again, Top Gear on History (and all-around car geek) Rutledge Wood is partnering with Summit Racing on a new project—a 1953 Plymouth Suburban two-door station wagon. And get this—the car was given to Rutledge by The King himself, Richard Petty!
In 2013, Summit Racing collaborated with Rutledge on a 1949 Chevy Step Van. We documented the build here. The van made appearances on the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour and at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The Plymouth promises to be even cooler.
Randy Allgood at Kenwood Rod Shop in Fayetteville, GA will build the Plymouth wagon with a combination of traditional hot rod style and modern mechanicals and comfort. At this point, plans are to use a fuel-injected, 408-cubic-inch small-block Chrysler mated to a T-56 six-speed transmission, custom Magnaflow dual exhaust, Heidt’s suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. The car will have modern conveniences like air conditioning, power steering/brakes, power windows and doors—the works.
Just like we did with Rut’s van, we’ll be covering the wagon build beginning in early 2014.
Hey Rutledge, that car is all you! Have a Happy New Year!!!!
This looks awesome, I’m so looking to see the finished project!
Looks awesome. I have a 52 Suburban I will be doing the same to as soon as I am finished with my 40 Plymouth Truck. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
I just think its a little disappointing that someone who presents a car show doesn’t work on his own car. like chef who only eats the food not help make the food.
