Learn how to properly install piston rings by watching this six-minute Summit Racing Quick Flicks video.
You’ll learn how to avoid causing damage during installation, how to identify the top of the rings, and how to clock the piston rings in the correct orientation–all of which will help you get the job done efficiently and maximize your engine’s power and performance.

front of engine should be in-line with the piston pin…
Since the wrist pin in your diagram at 4:25 is drawn going the wrong direction, should the expander ring be rotated to not line up with the pin or should the gap locations remain as drawn in the diagram? (If the front of engine mark on the piston is on the left side, the wrist pin would run left to right)
Thinking more on this, I just answered my own question. You never want a gap in any of the rings at the top or bottom of the cylinder so the way I see it, the ring gap locations stay where you show them and only the pin direction should be rotated 90 degrees.
Please tell me more about the new engine you built with the wrist pins perpendicular to the direction of the front of the engine! Actually, I recommend you reshoot this video, because it makes you look like you don’t really know how an engine works. Not good for the image of Summit Racing.
