Rejoice, California hot rodders—MSD was recently granted Executive Order Number D-722 from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) making the Atomic Fuel Injection System (part numbers MSD-2900 and MSD-2910) legal for use on 1987 and older GM passenger cars and trucks that came from the factory with a carbureted V8 engine. According to MSD, the Atomic EFI system is the only California-legal aftermarket EFI system available for these vehicles.
This means you guys with carbureted Camaros, Malibus, Monte Carlos, and pickups can enjoy the improved drivability, better part-throttle acceleration, smoother idle, and extra fuel mileage an Atomic EFI system can provide while staying smog-legal.
According to MSD, thorough testing confirmed the Atomic EFI system did not reduce the effectiveness of applicable vehicle pollution control systems, earning an exemption from the prohibitions of Section 27156 of the California Vehicle Code for 1987 and older GM passenger cars and pickups originally equipped with a V8 engine and carburetor. MSD will supply an information label with the E.O. Number and details that must be affixed on your vehicle for inspection purposes.
The CARB Executive Order also means the Atomic EFI system provides “reasonable basis” for satisfying the anti-tampering requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act. That means the systems are legal for use in the remaining 49 states of our fair land.
So what are you waiting for? Enjoy better performance and keep the smog police happy too with an MSD Atomic EFI System!
Its a great start. But what about the Mopar and Ford camps ? I have a 1977 D-100 with a 318, I’ve been looking for a EFI system thst CARB approved.
Looking forward to seeing your response.
Agreed. There’s thousands of us with Lean Burn Chrysler feedback systems wanting to jump ship…
So, good news for GM.what about Ford or MOPAR?
What about an 81 Chevrolet Malibu with a V6 (BOP 231)
Always a GM, never anyone else.
Must not like high sales #’s…
I have a 77 Corvette. Can I use a 14″ chromr air filter with this system, and still be CARB compliment? I live in California.

GM TBI is easily approved on a GM product, Bolt on, easy. This fixes a problem where there isn’t one. How about Ford, Chrysler, Jeep, IH.
Will this bolt up to a Vortec 350 with a Qjet carb?
We have a 1989 motorhome (GM chassis, P30) with a 454 and a 4bbl quadrajet / AIR system. We want to replace the carburetor with a TBI system to begin with and (Hopefully) we’ll be able to eliminate the AIR as well.
Any thoughts, recommendations? (Thanks)
I have the same issue. Apparently, no response is the only response? Seems like they would have something to say.
Hey guys, click here to contact the Summit Racing tech folks. They can talk through your setup in a bit more detail, weight some options, and recommend the right EFI setup for your AIR-equipped 454.
Have an 83 Silverado with the 305, would like to upgrade from the E4ME Q-jet to EFI. Any dealers or shops that could do the conversion in Ca. want to keep it legal.
Will this fit on a 1978 350 with the air pump and EGR . I’m in California the no fun state.
Is my 1980 Chevrolet Silverado c10350 v8 Californian legal to run MSD 2900 EFI Thans Jim
1976 jeep CJ7 with AMC 304 V8.
How about me?
Does this only apply to carbureted vehicles? I have a 93 Silverado with TBI I’d like to replace.
