Take a BMW E30, a GM LS engine, and hand it over to a to Smokey’s Dyno & Performance and there are a couple things you can expect. First is some top-notch work fitting the powerplant into the car and generating quite a bit of horsepower, about 560 horsepower to the rear wheels. The second thing is a well rounded car that not only can handle speed in a straight line, but also carving up some curves.
We spoke to Smokey’s Dyno & Performance last fall about Project GMW and had a chance to catch up with them in Wilmington, Ohio at the East Coast Timing Association Ohio Mile. This is a land speed event to test what top mile per hour a car can reach from a stand still over the one mile course.
For the Smokey’s crew, the road to the Ohio Mile wasn’t the easiest. Just days before the Ohio Mile event, Brandon and his team pulled the transmission out of the car to have it replaced after hearing a little noise when running through the gears. In addition to a new RPM Hybrid transmission, the Smokey’s Dyno & Performance team added a wider front & rear tires for better grip as well as reworked the suspension.
Project GMW will be able to get the most out of the suspension upgrades when it hits the track at Mid-Ohio later in May for a shake down and tuning session in preparation for Smokey’s Dyno & Performance Track Day.
In the mean time, you can ride along with Brandon as he makes a pass at the Ohio Mile.
