Generally:
Cast iron flat tappet cams = Cast iron distributor gear
Steel roller tappet cams = Soft bronze alloy distributor gear
But Smith points out that melonized steel distributor gears are both versatile and affordable, and if you are unsure of your camshaft material, a melonized steel gear will eliminate the guesswork.
