The longer diesel fuel sits in your fuel system and tank, the more it can become contaminated with water, sludge, and solidify into gel which restricts fuel flow and robs power from your engine, says Summit Racing tech adviser Carl Pritts.
Diesel fuel pumps are an effective way to keep diesel fuel clean. In this video from Powerblock TV and Summit Racing, Pritts showcases a Pureflow AirDog II diesel fuel pump which he says fits the bill.
The unit features an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a flow rating up to 165 gph, a fuel filter that traps solids as small as two microns, and more.
Diesel fuel is expensive, Pritts says, and adding a high performance diesel fuel pump to your system is an effective way to get your money’s worth out of every gallon of diesel.

What do you recommend to supply a 1.9 VW TDI engine? I do not know the pressure or volume required for that engine.
Is there an in-tank solution for a 84 Jeep? This tank was for gasoline and served a 6 cylinder engine with a block mounted fuel pump.
Yea, I’m putting a TDI in a Jeep.
Hey Brian, you didn’t specify which year 1.9L you’re using. There were some tweaks made to the engine over its production run, so you may need to take that into account. But, we found several fuel pumps, both internal and external, designed for the VW TDI four-cylinder. You also didn’t mention which Jeep you’re swapping into. But you can likely take some measurements of both the pump and tank depth and go from there. Good luck with the build!
