Like the Cannonball Run he invented, Brock Yates completed another event much too fast.

Yates died Wednesday from Alzheimer’s-related complications, Autoweek reported. He was 82.

Yates was a long-time automotive and motorsports journalist, most notably at Car and Driver.

In 1971, he and racer Dan Gurney drove a Ferrari Daytona coupe in a non-stop race against other miscreant speed mavens from New York City to the Pacific Ocean in a then-record 35 hours and 54 minutes.

If you’ve never read Yates’ original story from 1972 about the first Cannonball Run in Car and Driver, you probably owe it to yourself to do so.

Yates also penned the screenplay for the 1981 Burt Reynolds film “The Cannonball Run.”

His was a life well lived. And today we tip our caps to all that he did for auto enthusiasts and the people who write about such things.

We extend the thoughts and prayers of the OnAllCylinders team to Yates’ family, friends, and many fans.
