Sprint car racer Dave Steele died during a weekend race at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, FL in what appeared to be a routine wreck on the first turn of the 35-lap feature race.
It’s the kind of thing no one wants to see, but Steele was such a significant presence in pavement sprint car racing, that we also couldn’t ignore it.
Steve Cole Smith wrote a great tribute which we read in Sports Illustrated, but was originally published here at The Drive.
According to Smith, Steele “won pretty much everything you can in pavement, short-track, open-wheel racing” and he also made starts in IndyCar, NASCAR Xfinity, and ARCA races.
You should give Smith’s story a read.
Steele is survived by his wife and three children. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at the OnAllCylinders and Summit Racing families are with them and everyone touched by Steele’s passing.
