Junkyard-sourcing a specific LS engine? If you’ve already got the LS or LS-based Vortec engine picked out for your project, this guide will tell you which vehicles came from the factory with it.
It’s also a handy resource to have should you need to grab a specialized bracket or engine-specific parts from that same car, or one like it.
If you’re heading out to the yard just to see what’s available, check out our LS Engine Spotter’s Guide, Part 1: Matching the Vehicle to the Engine post. It contains essentially the same information, only sorted by make and model instead of General Motors RPO codes so you can quickly find out which LS engine came in whatever 1997-and-up GM vehicle you might find.
Make sure you search by RPO code (like LM7, LS1, etc.) to be sure you’ve got the right engine. Many LS-family engines share displacements and are virtually identical even to a keen eye.

Thanks to a penchant for vintage Honda motorcycles, he spends the rest of his time fiddling with carburetors and cleaning chain lube off his left pant leg.

The Issue you will have is the LR4 was still a gen. 3 with 24x computer. The Ly2 is 58X and you would need to purchase a signal converter like the Lingenfelter LPE-L460065397. With the Tac Module, throttle body, injector differences, it’s going to be easiest to swap your original intake manifold to the new engine…it will fit fine. The cam position moved, but you can use a CEI-109089 extension harness. The knock sensors moved to the side of the block so use extension harness LPE-RXLS2-KSRH. Those are the major things you’ll run into
I have a 2006 Silverado with a 5.3 iam wondering if I can put in a 2002 LS6 5.7 zo6 motor without having to change wiring harness or what do I have to do
Thanks so much for your service here. I have a 2013 427 LS7. Seems there are many available upgrades like the Trick Flow Heads etc but most stock components are kick ass. Two questions. 1 the cylinder heads look strong with good chamber and port volume. Is it worth the upgrade to a Trick Flow type head.Does it have bigger volumes and or bigger valves? 2 – the cam is strong but it looks like the duration at 50 is very light even with great lift etc. Most cams with 210-220 or so run out of RPM or was that the intention to keep the motor together.
I have also heard of some engine problems with the LS7. Any info would be much appreciated.
