Jason Johnson succumbed to injuries he sustained in a crash on Saturday during a sprint car race at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI.
Johnson, 41, and a Eunice, LA native, raced in the World of Outlaws sprint car series.
The crash occured on lap 18, just after a restart, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Johnson’s car flipped over the track’s guard barrier and through a billboard. He was airlifted to Aurora Medical Center in Summit, WI, about 40 miles southeast of the racetrack, where hospital officials pronounced him dead.
Johnson was the World of Outlaws’ Rookie of the Year in 2015. He has 12 World of Outlaws wins, five American Sprint Car Series championships, and won the Knoxville (Iowa) Nationals in 2016.
The World of Outlaws has added a memorial article on Johnson with details on his life both on and off the track.
Several prominent racers in the Motorsports community offered condolences via Twitter.
