SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Let’s hear it for the new guys!
The 2018 Goodguys AutoCross Class Champions were crowned last weekend in Scottsdale, AZ, and there were first time championship winners across all five divisions.
South Dakota’s Jared Leisinger, 20, dominated the PRO class taking home event wins in Raleigh, Texas, Lexington and Charlotte. In addition to winning the 2018 PRO Class Championship, Jared drove his Summit Racing sponsored ‘64 Corvette roadster to third place in last weekend’s Duel in the Desert. He defeated his brother Josh in the season-long points race 196 to 153. Powered by a Holley EFI-equipped LSR V8 prepped by Warren Johnson, Leisinger’s topless ‘Vette runs a Gear Star transmission, a custom chassis by Cale Kern, ABCO Performance shocks, Forgeline wheels, Wilwood brakes and Kumho Tires. Leisinger is joined on the Summit Racing team by his brother Josh’s ‘64 Corvette coupe and his mother Karen’s ‘70 Camaro.
The most dominant performance of the season was turned in by Jasper, Indiana’s Jason Brady. Driving his hopped up LS3-powered 1970 K5 Blazer, Brady won the Truck division by a whopping 120 points, collecting 7 event wins along the way. Body roll is not an issue with Brady’s Blazer thanks to a Cale Kern chassis, RideTech TQ coilovers, Wilwood brakes, Forgeline Wheels and Kumho Tires. Changing gears is easy thanks to the old school Winter’s Quickchange!
NorCal Garage driver David Carroll collected the Street Machine class title by winning the Del Mar shootout this Spring as well as wins at three of four Pleasanton events. Carroll’s 1975 Datsun 280z is a perfect blend of Japanese styling with American horsepower and handling. The JDM monster is powered by a hi-winding LS3 V8/Centerforce clutch combo and is equipped with JRi shocks, RideTech springs, Wilwood brakes and sticky Falken Tires.
In Hot Rod, Stan Martin edged Morgan Martin by just six points to take the class Championship behind the wheel of his 1930 Model A Ford. Martin finished runner up at Lone Star Nationals events at Texas Motor Speedway earning enough points for the class title.
The All American Sunday division, which features competition for post-1987 cars was won by Oceanside, California’s Richard Trujillo. Driving his LS3-powered 2002 Porsche Carrera S4, all Trujillo needed was the event win at the Goodguys Del Mar Nationals to earn enough points for the title.
There was a typo regarding Jared Leisinger’s car. It has ABCO Performance shocks, not Afco shocks.
