When Chrysler announced it was bringing back the legendary Hemi in the early 2000s, it was a big deal. This new series of Hemi engines is often referred to as the “Gen. 3” after the first generation FirePower (1951-59) and second generation Elephant 426 (1964-71).
Note: This Spec Guide is part of a series of Hemi Engine Spec guides we’re putting together. See Other Hemi Engine Spec Guides Here.
The Hemi Returns!
The first edition of the third generation Mopar Hemi engine made its debut in 2003 Dodge Ram trucks and featured a 5.7 liter (345 cubic inch) displacement.
Still considered a small-block engine based on displacement, the 5.7L Gen. III Hemi uses a hemispherical combustion chamber with two spark plugs per cylinder and small wedge flats along with excellent intake and exhaust ports.
This 5.7L engine configuration would be the basis for future Hemi displacement variations.
This Engine Guide is Specifically for the 2003-08 Mopar Gen. III 5.7L Hemi Engine.

Would like this same info in the future for the later 5.7 Hemi 09 & up.Thanks.
Brian,
I am working on that right now. It should be ready in the near future.
I have a 1969 Dodge Dart. Will a 5.7 HEMI fit into the engine bay? Will have to get a new bell housing for the 4spd.to mount to? I found a lot of 5.7 HEMI’s in the Pull A Part junk yard this week. Thanks for the information on the part numbers and casting numbers.
What is the best way to get an additional 50 to 100 HP out of a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab with 4WD and a 5.7 Liter Hemi in it? Actually looking for low end torque improvement for towing as much as anything.
i wish someone would publish a complete listing of casting numbers for the gen 3 hemi years 2003-2008, the years before the eagle head. I always see the 53021300AJ (Right) and 53021300BA (left) as the only head number talked about. I have a set of heads 53021608BL and BJ respectively that i want to use, unless there is a way of deciphering mopar part numbers that i am not aware of, i dont understand. i type in google this 53021608BL head number and it came back with posts from old forums as 300C heads in that 2003-2008 range since the intake runner is narrow and has port for injector, so why cant we build a listing of possible casting numbers for this 2003-2008 range? and second, is this a good head? are they all the same?
Your information on the pistons is incorrect. For the 2003-2008 engines, they are domed with no valve reliefs. I can send you pictures if you like.
He’s right… not dished with valve reliefs. Slight dome, almost look like flat top pistons, smooth with no notches.
I have a 2008 Jeep Commander with a 5.7 Hemi. I am looking to replace the oil pump and timing chain componets… I see where some
parts options refer to a VIN 2 Hemi? What does this mean?
Jeff,
Do you know what the installed valve guide height is? Im rebuilding the motor in the better half’s 2006 Charger R/T. There’s the exhaust guide in #3 that is notably different than the others that i found when i was porting the exhaust runners so i flip it and check the height of the guide and its at 0.970 from the machined pocket (yes, with the seal’s removed)when all the others check 0.910. Any info on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rick Thomas
Hello,
How many heads can be unloaded on the MDS?
Can a MDS Block be used to replace a Non-MDS Block if the 4 Bores for the Solenoid Valves that shut off the Oil Flow are blocked off?
Everything from the Non-MDS Engine would be used unless i would just have to change the Cam and Valvetrain Assembly.
Hey Brian, this article may have your answer, as it goes into details on the MDS setup: How to Eliminate the Multiple Displacement System in Your Gen. III Hemi with a Summit Racing Pro Hemi Non-MDS Camshaft
