The Blue Oval brigade has been patiently waiting for a new, seventh-generation Mustang for a while now-—and Ford just delivered.
Wearing new sheetmetal that carries on the styling of the pervious S550 generation, the new Ford Mustang S650 still comes in both a hardtop and convertible.
It will also still be available with 5.0L Coyote V8 power.
Speaking of that Coyote, Ford says it’s the most powerful naturally aspirated 5.0L ever offered in a Mustang GT. While Ford didn’t offer an official horsepower number in the press release, it did allude to a revised airbox and throttle body for improved airflow.
The standard 2.3L EcoBoost is also described as “all-new,” though again Ford is mum on HP and torque details.
What we can say is that the six speed manual is still available and it features a rev-matching capability that maintains engine RPM as you shift gears. (Or you can choose a 10-speed automatic.)
Ford did give us some features of the Performance Pack offered on both the Mustang GT and EcoBoost models. It adds some track-focused upgrades like a strut tower brace, limited slip differential, larger Brembos, a special wheel/tire package, and an active suspension.
Also included in the Performance Pack is a nifty new electronic “drift” brake that, Ford says, unlocks the Mustang’s real wheel-drive drift capability.
The release also mentions a quicker steering ratio designed to improve the Mustang’s handling characteristics.
It seems Ford is really, really proud of the new Mustang’s interior as well. Calling it “fighter jet-inspired,” the cockpit includes a digital instrument cluster that’s over a foot wide. And it can be customized to the driver’s taste. A new flat-bottom steering wheel and optional Recaro seats complement the racy aesthetic.
The new Mustang will be made in Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan assembly plant and the Blue Oval tells us that the new S650 Mustang models will start hitting dealer showrooms next summer.
