Own a Dodge or Ram truck with a Cummins 6.7L diesel engine? Then there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the catastrophic grid heater bolt issue—often referred to as the P2609 fault, thanks to its telltale diagnostic trouble code.

If you haven’t though, here’s the problem in a nutshell:

There’s a small 10mm bolt on the grid heater assembly that, over years and miles, has a tendency to degrade. With enough time, that bolt could eventually fall off the grid heater assembly, get sucked down the intake, and end up in the #6 cylinder—where it can do all sorts of nasty damage to the cylinder head, piston, and cylinder walls.

Suffice it to say, it’s a repair that can easily run thousands of dollars.

But there’s good news coming from Gale Banks and his crew of diesel dynamos over at Banks Power.

Here’s the problem. As your 6.7L Cummins diesel engine racks up hours, this bolt will degrade and could potentially fall off and get sucked into the cylinders. (Image/Banks Power)

Not only do the Banks Monster-Ram Intake Elbows eliminate the threat of that dreaded P2609 grid heater bolt failure, they offer improved power AND efficiency thanks to a free-flowing elbow design. In fact, Gale Banks himself says there’s up to an 88 percent increase in mass airflow vs. the stock piece.

We’re calling that a two-fer, in radio DJ parlance.

Though originally intended to improve airflow, since the Banks Monster-Ram elbow eliminates the restrictive stock heater grid, it also erases risk of the heater bolt failure too. Note the relocated grid heater in the top of the elbow. (Image/Banks Power)

And if you’re wondering, the Banks unit doesn’t eliminate the grid heater, it’s still there—only it’s redesigned and relocated, so you won’t sacrifice cold-weather starting performance for this invaluable peace-of-mind.

Better still, these Monster-Ram Intake Elbows for the Cummins 6.7L diesel engine are 50-state emissions compliant under CARB E.O. number D-161-143.
