Columbus, Ohio – Try as we might, there’s no hiding our car nerdiness around here. So, despite being presented with hundreds of top-tier show cars, impeccable paint jobs, and meticulously polished chrome at the annual Goodguys Summit Racing Nationals…
…we just want to pop some hoods and check out some engines.
And from turbo four-bangers to an array of venerable inline sixes, the show never disappoints either. Better still, since the Goodguys rolling eligibility window is stretching well into the 1990s now, we even spotted *heavy breathing into a paper bag* a transverse V8!
Get a load of all these wicked powerplants for yourself and see all the awesome engines we spotted at the 2024 event.
The GTO was this year’s featured nameplate, so we got plenty of good shots of Poncho V8s.(Image/OnAllCylinders)This 400-4 was spotted in non-other than a rare 1973 Le Mans-derived GTO. (Image/OnAllCylinders)The 3.4L V6 was found in the Camaro/Firebird twins from 1993-95. It was joined by the trusty 3.8L in 1995 and then summarily replaced by it in 1996. (Image/OnAllCylinders)This 327 SBC was under the hood of a 1969 Camaro RS. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Despite rising to fame in the Corvette, the ubiquitous 350 Chevy had plenty of uses under the hood of second-gen. Camaros too. (Image/OnAllCylinders)This is the special “TA” spec 340 engine found in the AAR’ Cuda that was made specifically for Trans Am homologation. (Image/OnAllCylinders)We’re morally obligated to photograph every AMC six we come across. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Told ya. This is a 258 we spotted in a Gremlin. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Got a 307 in your Chevy too? You might want to read this. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Thanks to low hood clearance, the 302 Ford found in early Broncos is easily identified by its offset air cleaner. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Here’s the later 454 big block Chevy V8 found in the eponymous Chevy “454SS” C-series truck. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Born from the smog era of the 1970s, Cadillac’s “High Technology” series of V8s powered a range of cars in the Caddy lineup, before being replaced by the Northstar series in the early 1990s. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Here’s a 401 Buick Nailhead we spotted in a 1961 Invicta coupe. (Image/OnAllCylinders)And this 460 cubic inch beast was found under the hood of a 1972 Lincoln Mark IV. (Image/OnAllCylinders)We put this one in here just to make Mustang purists mad. (Image/OnAllCylinders)When paired with a Getrag five-speed, the roughly 200ish horsepower LQ1 3.4L V6 made the 1990s-era Cutlass a hoot to drive. (Image/OnAllCylinders)Obligatory.(Image/OnAllCylinders)
Paul is the editor of OnAllCylinders. When he's not writing, you'll probably find him fixing oil leaks in a Jeep CJ-5 or roof leaks in an old Corvette ragtop. Thanks to a penchant for vintage Honda motorcycles, he spends the rest of his time fiddling with carburetors and cleaning chain lube off his left pant leg.
