It’s no secret that an LS engine takes to cam swaps like a toddler to candy, but if you live in a state that follows the established CARB guidelines, you still have to ensure your engine remains emissions compliant.

That’s why the cam experts over at COMP worked directly with CARB officials on its lineup of FSL Hydraulic Roller Camshafts for the GM LS engine.

With CARB EO Number D-279-13 in their back pockets, the COMP folks made sure these cams are 50-state legal—hence the “FSL” designation. But that’s just the start of the magic here.

That’s because, depending on the cam you choose, COMP says some of the camshafts in the FSL lineup have been tested to improve output by up to 47 horsepower. And better yet, COMP offers cam swap options that are drop-in installs that work with the original valve springs and don’t require an ECU tune. Check each your specific cam to ensure compatibility with AFM or VVT. (We’ll give you a quick rundown on the specs of some of the more popular options in the FSL cam series below.)

All told, COMP says these cams are capable of picking up significant gains from the stock trim—close to 50 horsepower in certain applications—all completely emissions-compliant. That’s a win-win in our performance playbook.
