The latest Summit Racing project is a Ram 2500 Heavy Duty pickup truck equipped with a Cummins 6.7L diesel engine.

But unlike a lot of project builds, the Summit Racing team didn’t start with a showroom-fresh vehicle here. Nope, this 2018 Ram 2500 is already a long haul, high mileage workhorse, with plenty of snow, rain, and dirt under its tires.

So far during the Ram Revamp project, the Summit Racing folks have focused on mechanical upgrades and maintenance; now they’re turning their attention to attacking rust and freshening up the old truck’s paint.

After all, the goal of the Ram Revamp is to make the truck a suitable alternative to buying a new one, and appearance is a big part of that calculus.

But more importantly, this particular truck has spent much of its life in the snow- and salt-covered roads of the northern United States, which means rust is starting to gain a toehold on the body and chassis. Left unchecked, corrosion would render all other upgrades moot, so finding and repairing rust is a critical facet of the Ram Revamp series.

To help in that arena, the project team called in a paint and restoration expert. Follow along and you’ll see some handy tricks, tools, and techniques for rust repair—and how to restore a weathered paint finish.
