Another Los Angeles, California area racetrack will close its doors for good after 2024.

Irwindale Speedway opened in 1999 and, since that time, the venue has hosted an impressive mix of motorsports activity.

Both the NHRA and NMCA once held events on its dragstrip and the track played a significant role in running sanctioned street legal drag races. The complex’s banked oval track has welcomed NASCAR, ARCA, and all sorts of short track racing. Given its location in the southern California drifting scene, Formula D was also a popular attraction at the venerable speedway.

For the past few years, the track has been renewing a year-to-year lease and rumors swirled about the high-value property being converted into a retail and industrial space. Thanks to the management of former racer Tim Huddleston, the track endured the Covid pandemic and stayed open despite fears of impending closures and other commercial pressures.

The closure announcement says the track will continue holding scheduled motorsports events through the 2024 calendar year.

Please, if you have a local race track or dragstrip in your town, make sure to support it!
