NASCAR driver Jason Leffler died Wednesday night at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey due to injuries suffered in an accident during a dirt track sprint car race.

He was 37.

Affectionately called “LEFturn,” Leffler was reportedly running second in the event’s first heat race when he lost control on the high-banked dirt oval track and his car flipped several times on the front straightaway. The track is dubbed “The Fastest Dirt Track in the East.” The accident took place about 8:30 pm.

Leffler was pronounced dead at Crozer-Chester Medical Center shortly after 9 pm.

Leffler was single. He is survived by his 5-year-old son, Charlie Dean.

These are the worst kinds of things to report. While we want to deliver news as appropriate, we never want to do so dispassionately. Our thoughts and prayers are with Leffler’s young son and everyone impacted by his passing.

Godspeed, Jason.
