Editor’s Note: The year 2014 gave us the introduction of the 707-horse Hellcat and the end of the popular fifth-generation Mustang. A sinkhole swallowed up a bunch of Corvettes, and then Mother Earth spit out some rare buried automotive treasure (sort of). The year provided us with some interesting automotive news. Here are the five most-popular news stories from 2014.

The National Corvette Museum Sinkhole

Without warning, a sinkhole opened up inside the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY in the middle of the night, swallowing eight collector Corvettes and leaving a massive hole in the ground which created unprecedented interest in the already-famous museum.

We have the initial video footage from inside the museum when the sinkhole first formed, and we followed the story throughout the vehicle-recovery process and reported on plans for each of the eight fallen Corvettes.

Ford Racing Takes the 2015 Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost Into the 12s!

A 2015 Mustang powered by Ford’s 2.3L four-cylinder EcoBoost engine clocked a 12.56-second pass during a day of testing all three new Mustangs. The Mustang was outfitted with a subframe kit, half-shaft kit, driveshaft loops, custom exhaust, roll cage, bucket seat, and Ford Racing engine calibration.

Did we mention it had a four-cylinder engine?

Hellcat Challenger Makes 707 HP

When we first got wind of the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, we were told we could expect the Hellcat to spit out an impressive 600-plus horses.

Then we heard different.

And since it has been demonstrated that the new Hellcat will pump out 707 horsepower from the 6.2L supercharged V8 engine, people have been salivating over this modern marvel.

Larry Larson’s S10 Becomes Fastest Street Car

Larry Larson became the first person to make a five-second pass in a street legal vehicle. Larson made a 5.95-second, 244.43-mile-per-hour pass in his 1998 Chevy S10 Pro Mod pickup truck at the Street Car Super Nationals in Las Vegas, NV. New Shelby GT350 Features Most Powerful Naturally Aspirated Ford Production Engine Ever

Ford unveiled the brand new Shelby GT350 in November—a bad machine powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2L V8 churning out more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 ft.-lbs. of torque. It’s the kind of car that can change the hearts and minds of early critics of the sixth-generation Mustang’s design. And we fully expect it will.

There is much to be excited about for 2015. Happy New Year, indeed.
