The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax debuted yesterday, and General Motors is hoping the diesel truck will give the already-popular Colorado line an edge over Toyota’s midsize rig, the Tacoma. They’re also hoping that by offering the 2.8L Duramax for only the LT and Z71 crew cab models, the diesel-powered Colorado will prove to be a viable midsize alternative to the full-size Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which has seen sales slump recently.
The Colorado Duramax will offer 181 horsepower, 369 ft.-lbs. of torque, and 7,700-pound towing capacity. Although fuel economy numbers haven’t been released, Chevy officials expect the Colorado Duramax to better the Ram EcoDiesel’s 29 miles-per-gallon rating. Pricing on the truck will start at $31,700, or about $3,730 more than the gasoline-powered V6 version.
In addition to the 2.8L Duramax engine, the diesel Colorado will feature a six-speed automatic transmission, two- or four-wheel drive, and an exhaust braking system.
