Like it or not, self-driving cars are in the works.
“(Google and other tech companies) are not my enemy; these are people who will help us shape the next phase of the automotive industry,” Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told USA Today.
Marchionne’s statement was in reference to Fiat Chrysler’s agreement to supply Google with 100 Chrysler Pacifica minivans to use for self-driving car development. Although the two companies don’t yet have a definitive plan to put self-driving technology into new Chrysler vehicles, the minivans will help Google expand its self-driving car testing because it will not have to modify 100 minivans from scratch. The 2017 Pacificas included in the deal have been slightly reconfigured to accommodate on-board radar, cameras, and other necessary equipment for the conversion.
