It’s official: Jeff Gordon is coming out of retirement.

For now.

Gordon, the legendary four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion who retired following the 2015 season, will temporarily return to the driver’s seat for the Brickyard 400 on Sunday. Gordon will replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the #88 Chevrolet as Earnhardt continues his recovery from concussion-like symptoms. Hendrick Motorsports says Earnhardt will also miss the July 31 race at Pocono.

Gordon’s decision to put retirement on temporary hold helps out his former boss. He spent his entire 23-year Sprint Cup career racing with Rick Hendrick Motorsports in his famous #24 car. Don’t be surprised if Gordon opts to help out by racing at the Pocono event as well.
