After you build a serious 347 cubic inch Ford 5.0—like we did in our first installment of Project Strokers Wild—what do you do for an encore? You build it a bigger, badder brother.
In this second installment of our Stroker’s Wild engine series, we’ll show you how we built a 393 cubic inch 351 Windsor. The big advantage of a 393 is size. The engine’s extra 42 cubic inches mean power, and lots of it. Need low- and mid-range grunt for a street car or for towing? A 393 is a veritable torque monster. Horsepower? Properly built, a 393 can make an easy 450 to 500 horsepower. And it’s all in a package that will fit under the hood of a Mustang. Well, a tall hood.
A 393 can be pretty inexpensive to build, too. The only custom piece is the crank—the rest of the combination uses a .030-inch overbored stock block, stock length 351W rods, and stock-type 302 pistons. If you’re conservative with the rest of the engine, you can get those extra 42 cubes for just a few bucks more than a stock-stroke 351W buildup.
We built our 393 with a Summit Racing cast stroker crank and H-beam connecting rods, Trick Flow 10:1 forged pistons, a Crane roller cam, Trick Flow Twisted Wedge Race 225 aluminum heads, and a Holley 750 cfm double pumper carburetor on an Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake manifold. The Summit Racing crank is no longer available, but you can duplicate our build using a SCAT Series 9000 crankshaft instead. Check out the parts list below–you’ll see how easy it is to build a hot stroker Windsor of your own!

With 225 runner heads you would benefit from Atleast an Holley 850 HP. And mahle pistols weighing in at around 460 grams will lighten the rotating assembly up a little.last but not least with solid mounts and a dual plane intake with the plenum cut out a 393 will fit under a stock hood on a foxbody.
Ive built the same engine with the “ESP” crankshaft and a Comp.576″.600″ camshaft with Windsor SR. heads ported and polished with 2.05″ 1.6″ valves and 2 degree cam advance and 11.5 to 1 compression with a single plain highrise intake and and 800 cfm doublepumper carb and I’m making close to 550 HP at the wheels in a 95 Stang!
is the 351w block a non roller block . is there a differance in push rods from a non roller block to roller block
PUSHROD ROLLER = 8.500 5/16
PUSHROD MECHANICAL = 8.150 5/16
For: youtube = mecanica de paulo
Yes there is a differance in length a pushrod checker will give you a right measurement
PUSHROD ROLLER #TFS-21408500
PUSHROD MECHANICAL #CCA-7965-16

For the above mentioned combo what is the best cylinder head volume.
Summit asket in the compression calculator, ther are different part numbers at the Trick flow page .
Recommended combustion chamber volume is 61cc.
Is 65 cc.

Can I get most of those parts in a scat brand stroker kit? Or be easier to buy one at a time…?
Yes, you can get everything you need in a SCAT kit. Here is a link that will help you build a 393: http://www.summitracing.com/search/department/engines-components/section/engine-kits-rotating-assemblies/brand/scat-engine-components/part-type/engine-rotating-kits/make/ford/engine-size/5-8l-351/engine-family/ford-small-block-windsor/actual-engine-cid/393?

Thanks for the article I’ve built a 351 .060 with brodix heads 612 lift it’s a hot rod 63 falcon. I’m going to pick up a 3.85 crank and 302 pistons for next build next winter. Have a good day
Can this be used with a 69 block, if not what kit will work
Yes you can use it with a 69 model block,I have a 69 as well, and they are 20th shorter deck so if you use a flat top piston you will need to get a thicker head gasket or stay around 61 to 65 cc heads cause your compression will be very high, you have to pay very close attention to that, if you go for a head that has 58 to 53 cc then your compression is going to be in the neighborhood of 11:1 to 13:5.1 depending on the heads cc and also note that the pistons will hang out of the block say .03 to.06 thousands due to the shorter deck and I believe that 69&70 model blocks were the short decks 1971 to 1997 blocks were actually 9.5 decks,,, then you got the 9.2 deck height and that is a different animal,, good luck with your build!!!
What computer will I need to put a 393 in a 2012 mustang oh and fuel injection system
I have the short block.flat top pistons.already machined and built.what are your recommendations for the top end.hopeful 450 hp
LIFTERS?
Hey DC, they used Crane hydraulic roller lifters in the build, click here for lifter details.
What is another head u ca
N use trick flow doent offer the 225 race head anymore
Hey Jason – good timing, we reach out to the trick flow folks about this, and you may be excited to read about this upcoming release.
