Mustang HP Wars on Strip

The folks at Horsepower Wars decided to re-ignite an ages-old duel between the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro in a series of tiered challenges they’ve dubbed the “Pony Wars.”

Though baseline tests hinted that the 2017 Camaro may have the performance edge over the 2017 Mustang, both Pony Wars teams got a $5,000 budget to upgrade their rides as they saw fit.

After the dyno results in Episode 3, the Camaro still maintained an edge on the spreadsheet, but real-world performance is a whole different ballgame. So the Pony Wars teams packed up their rides and headed to Buttonwillow Raceway Park and Auto Club Dragway to see what 5,000 bucks in bolt-on upgrades look like on the track.

The Mustang and Camaro competed on a road course for lowest lap time, took runs down a quarter-mile dragstrip for lowest ET, and tested brake performance with shortest 60-to-zero stopping distance.

A few smoking tires and scorched brake pads later, the results were in.

If you’ve been following the Pony Wars since Episode 1, it’s fair to say that you’ll probably be shocked to see the leaderboard at the end of Stage 2.

What’s next? In Stage 3, each Pony Wars team will get $15,000 to do some serious internal engine work…and we’ve heard whispers of forced induction coming from at least one of the camps.

We’ll have the results from Stage 3 soon. In the meantime, you can catch previous episodes and exclusive behind-the-scenes videos here.
