Got a weird noise, shimmy, or other unpleasantness coming from your disc brakes?
Before you start throwing money at the problem, step one is to pull your wheel off and check things out.
But what do you look for?
This video from the brake brains over at Raybestos will show you how to visually inspect a brake caliper for proper function.
It’s not always as simple as just popping your head in there and searching for obvious damage.
Oftentimes a brake caliper (or brake rotor) can appear perfectly fine at a glance, but with some simple tests and troubleshooting you can locate potential problem areas in your brake system.
The video also shows how to measure a brake caliper using a dial indicator, for a more accurate assessment of its condition.
At just about two minutes long, this video is an easy watch, especially if your brakes are trying to tell you something—via shakes, screeches, or vibrations.

I’ll compare that on an air disc system also
