After a 10-plus-year hiatus, Tilton Engineering is returning to the Specialty Equipment Aftermarket Association (SEMA) Show to show off its latest innovation: the ST-246 line of 246mm (9.7-inch) twin disc clutch kits for the high-performance street/strip market.
The Buellton, CA-based company—which mainly produces products that target hardcore road racing and circle track crowd—said it has applied nearly 50 years of experience in racing clutches to engineer the ST-246 from the ground up as a “true performance twin disc clutch.” For the new line, the company focused on characteristics like high-torque capacity, low-wear rate, smooth shifting, and drivability.
According to Tilton, each kit includes a billet chromoly steel flywheel along with either sprung-hub organic discs or solid-hub cerametallic discs, boasting capacities of 850 foot-pounds and 1,250 foot-pounds, respectively. Other features include a precision-machined aluminum clutch cover, a high-mass main pressure plate and floater plate, and heavy-duty straps designed to minimize noise and provide a fast, clean release between shifts.
Specific applications for the ST-246 series include several Chevy Camaro and Corvette models, along with various Chevy and Ford engines. Each kit, except those meant for the Gen5 Camaro and C6 Corvette, are designed to be used with OEM release bearings.
