Not since the venerable Jeep CJ of the early 1980s has a V8 engine been found under the hood of a stock “Universal” Jeep.
Until today, when Jeep revealed its 392 Hemi-powered Wrangler Rubicon JL.
You read that right. After teasing a V8 concept during the summer, Jeep has committed to put the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 into production.
The big reveal happened on Jeep’s YouTube Channel.
Wrangler owners have been clamoring about a V8 option for years and, until today, have had to make do with aftermarket swaps.
Jeep says its 6.4L Hemi is good for 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. At this time, it looks like it can only be paired with the TorqueFlight eight-speed auto.
Power is sent to a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case on its way to Dana 44 axles with electronically locking diffs.
Externally, the first thing you’ll notice is the Wrangler Rubicon 392’s functional hood scoop, followed by its stock 33s on beadlock-capable wheels and two inch suspension lift.
And Jeepers will also welcome the return of the popular half-doors that disappeared briefly with the recent redesign.
The fine folks at JLWranglerForums have posted a several page thread that goes deep into the specs and technical nitty-gritty. It’s got a nice photo dump there too.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is expected to go on sale in early 2021.

I am looking at doing this swap on my 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Do you have the PNs for Engine, Transmission, & Transfer Case for this Jeep 392? I have read about pulling from a Charger or Challenger (Car style) or a Ram 2500, but want to ensure I am compatible with the parts I’m pulling while keeping my jeep Manual.
Thanks!
[…] For starters, let’s make it clear that the Xtreme Recon trim is essentially a package-on-a-package, because it’s only available on Jeep Wrangler Rubicon models. (And it’s absolutely worth mentioning that it’s also available on the brutal Wrangler Rubicon 392 V8.) […]
